These auditors undergo training and obtain an Energy Audit Certification. The candidates will be proficient and familiar with the principles of building science. Concepts like thermal resistance of insulation and building materials, etc. are a part of the training curriculum. The energy auditors have a prior bachelor’s degree in engineering or civil architecture. In order to be certified energy auditors, training is mandatory and must pass an examination.

Apart from engineering and architecture, candidates who are bachelors in environmental science can also go through the energy audit training. There are professionals who have years of practical experience in the field of building science. These professionals need not have a professional degree to undergo this training. If a candidate is at the beginning of making a career as a building professional, these certifications will be of great help. It will be an added credential to the candidate’s profile.

Professionals who are already in the field can upgrade themselves with the latest inputs. All that a fresh candidate needs is a 4 year degree from an accredited institution. To earn an Energy Audit Certification this candidate needs to complete the training and pass the exam with good grades. You need to approach qualified organizations that would train you and can certify you as energy auditors. There are national as well as regional training accredited centers. Most of these centers are accredited by the Building Performance Institute.

As part of the training program and curriculum almost all the concepts are covered. There is a five or a ten day intensive course after which there will be a certifying examination. Some examinations need a bachelor’s degree as well as few years of related experience in the field of building industry. The candidates have to provide these details of education and experience before they enroll for the examination. The examination will consist of a four hour written exam. Usually the exams are open book and hence the required pass percentage in most cases is 80 percent.
